There are as many different approaches and tactics for Scrabble® as many players playing this game. But what exactly are those "hooks"?

According to the official rules of playing Scrabble® new words may be formed by:

• Adding one or more letters to a word or letters already on the board.
• Placing a word at right angles to a word already on the board. The new word must use one of the letters already on the board or must add a letter to it.
• Placing a complete word parallel to a word already played so that adjacent letters also form complete words.

The first technique mentioned above, exactly defines hooking the words. It means that you can use already played words and prolong them with one or more letters to gain more points. This strategy can be very efficient as you are able to create up to seven, or in favorable circumstances even more, new words with the letters that you hold on the rack. The professional Scrabble® players can earn almost 1,500 points in one round!
