As the primary goal of Scrabble® is getting as much points as possible from the formed words, some players may tend to use words that are not accepted in this game. But which words are accepted?

All words in the agreed-upon dictionary, including inflections, are acceptable. Proper nouns are not acceptable, unless they have separate meanings (such as CHINA, JACK, or BOSTON). Most acronyms or abbreviations are not allowed, unless they appear as separate entries. Archaic spellings are generally not allowed. Foreign words which have been incorporated into the English language are valid. Vulgar and offensive words are acceptable in tournament and most club play (however, during the National School Scrabble Championship offensive words are not allowed).

In Northern America the most popular dictionaries during the tournaments are The Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary, known as OSPD and Official Tournament and Club Word List, shortly called Tournament Word List, referred to as OTaCWL, OWL, or TWL. The second one is based on OSPD with some modifications to make it more suitable for tournament play. Its British counterpart is Collins Scrabble Words (CSW), and the combination of those word lists is known as SOWPODS. Of course when you play "less" official tournaments with your friends or family you can also use other words which are not officially accepted by professional associations but are in the common usage in everyday language.
